For AMD, it just requires AMD64; AMD-V is not required to run vSphere or to run 64 bit guest OSes (that's also true for VMware Server and Workstation btw). Of course, if you have AMD-V, you have the choice to enable vSphere to use it.

VMware is still way, way, ahead of everybody in the enterprise arena. MS and Xen only recently got to the Live Migration stage and still, as far as I know, there's no overcommit of memory for either which severely limits how many VMs per host. Hyper-V is just plain hard as a virtualization platform when you try to scale it out to even a few hosts.

I'm with you on the KVM-however, watch Red Hat, they'll have a pretty viable v-platform soon. They already have the GFS so clustering is handled and have Live Migration down but need a lot of work on the interface and management options.

The system booted but would not log in and hung at that step. At that point I figured I'd just use Acronis to image the original mounted VHD and restore it to the new mounted VHD and it worked great. The final step was to use disk management to extend the restored partition to the full drive size. (No need to use bcdedit like JeffPeterson, but when I restored from Acronis I also made sure to restore the MBR; maybe JeffPeterson missed that step?).

Given that Windows7 includes VHD mounting and I use Acronis for my normal system back-ups I will stick to this method in future since it's extremely painless and based on my previous experience with system restores from Acronis, very reliable.
